City teams attending to spill after contractor damages sewer line in Strand

The City of Cape Town regrets to inform the public that a section of the beach at the Strand Pavilion has been closed until further notice. The contractor working on the Strand sea wall damaged the sewer rising main that runs along the beachfront earlier today, 7 March 2025. Given the sewer line’s proximity to the beach, sewage reached the shoreline. Repairs to the sewer are under way. The City will be taking regular water quality samples at this location, and open the beach once these meet the national water quality guidelines for recreational use. Read more below:

The contractor and officials from the Water and Sanitation Directorate have been working closely to contain the spill. Several City departments are involved.

Signage has been installed with immediate effect informing the public that a section of the beach on the eastern side of the Strand pavilion is closed until further notice.

Efforts are under way to restore the integrity of the sewer line.

The public is advised to please adhere to the signage. We will inform the public accordingly, once the beach is open again for recreational use.
